Our Cub Scout Pack

Pack 23 is a very active pack, and we do a lot of fun activities throughout the year!

We meet as a full pack at least once a month for a variety of events such as:

  • Family Campouts: We organize fall and spring campouts, which families can attend for the day or for weekend overnights. We also have annual winter camp-in at museums around the area.
  • Pinewood Derby: Scouts build, decorate, and race wooden cards during this classic event.
  • Scouting for Food: Scouts collect food donations from the community for a local food pantry.
  • Blue and Gold Banquet: We celebrate scouting and our pack’s accomplishments with a celebration
  • Teambuliding Games: We play a variety of games to build scout spirit and have fun together.
  • Service Projects: We participate in local creek cleanups and other initiatives to help the community.
  • Hiking: We take day hikes as either dens or a pack within the DC metro area.
  • Community Trips and Speakers: We take trips to visit firestations, animal shelters, museums, and historical sites. We also have speakers from the community, such as beekeepers, police officers, elected officials, and recycling managers.

Meetings are held at the St. Michael the Archangel School in downtown Silver Spring. Ideas for other activities either for Dens or the Pack are always welcome as we plan our annual calendar together.

Dens

Dens

There are approximately 50+ boys and girls from grades K through 5 registered in the Pack.  A Cubmaster leads the Pack with a Pack Committee made up of volunteers. The Pack is broken down into “Dens” according to Cub Scout ranks.

The ranks are:

Kindergarteners – Lion Scout
1st Graders – Tiger Scout
2nd Graders – Wolf Scout
3rd Graders – Bear Scout
4th Graders – Webelos
5th Graders – Arrow of Light

Each den has approximately 2 – 10 scouts assigned to it. A Den leader and one Assistant Den Leader, who are responsible adult individuals from the community, principally lead the scouts. The Den Leaders coordinate and manage the den’s actions and activities.

Meetings

Dens generally meet two times a month. The Den meetings are held at the St. Michael the Archangel School in downtown Silver Spring.

Throughout the year various activities are held that involve the entire Pack.  Typical activities planned during a year include two camping trips, community service days, pack picnics, museum visits, hikes, and the ever-popular Pinewood Derby Races. Ideas for other activities either for Dens or the Pack are always welcome as we plan our annual calendar together.

About Us

Pack 23 was started by Ryan and Tim Miller in August of 2014, at the request of Monsignor Tolentino at St. Michael the Archangel Church. Carlos Salazar, the District Executive for the White Oak District in the National Capital Area Council, played an important role in helping the Pack get its 1st charter with St. Michael’s Church.

The Pack started off with Tim Miller as the Cubmaster, Paula Lockhart as its Committee Chair, and her husband Kwame Gregoire as one of the Den Leaders and Treasurer. The Pack recruited 8 scouts and their parents that September, with their parents filling various roles in the Pack as Den Leaders, Committee, Members, etc.

The Pack has now grown to more than 30 scouts, recruited from St. Michael’s Church as well as surrounding schools in the area.

Pack 23 was one of the 1st Packs in the area to have a Lion program as its earliest rank for kindergarteners when the rank was in its pilot program.

We are also proud to be one of the 1st Packs in the area to welcome girls as scouts in our pack. These scouts have gone on to be successful at the troop level and we look forward to our first Cub Scout girls becoming Eagle scouts soon!
